Discover First

We will be offering a class called Discover First beginning on  Sunday, January 24, 2010 from 11:30-2:00 p.m.

Jesus said, “Come, follow me.”  He called all kinds of people:

  • a rich young ruler (Mark 10:21)
  • a fisherman (Mark 1:17, 18)
  • a notorious sinner (Matthew 9:9, Mark 3:18, 34).

The apostles extended the same call in Jesus name to all kinds of people:

  • a businesswoman (Acts 16:14, 15, 40)
  • a young person (1 Timothy 1:18, 4:12; 2 Timothy 1:5
  • persons of diverse ethnic flavors (acts 10:47, 48a, 48b).

In each case, provision was made for these persons to spend time with Jesus or Jesus’ followers so they would understand what it meant to follow the Master.  (Check out the bold references listed above!)

Following Jesus is not a religion, it is a relationship.  It is the beginning of a life-long transformation which starts when a person places his/her faith in Jesus, the same Jesus who went to the cross.

The elders and staff of FRC call you to come and follow Jesus.  We have designed a process called DISCOVER FIRST.  This process will help anyone interested in following Jesus understand what is involved to do so within the context of FRC.

DISCOVER FIRST will prepare anyone desiring membership at FRC.  It  will also enrich the lives of anyone who is already a member but who is seeking to know more about this congregation.

If you are called to:

  1. transfer your membership to FRC, or
  2. publicly profess your faith in Jesus Christ for the first time, or
  3. reaffirm your faith and join this congregation, or
  4. discover more about FRC

then the staff and elders invite you to DISCOVER FIRST.

You are encouraged to participate in DISCOVER FIRST because

  • we want you to explore FIRST what it means to follow Jesus before you commit to being His disciple;
  • we want you to know about the life and ministries of FIRST Reformed Church;
  • more than anything in the world, we want you personally to know Jesus, who is the FIRST and the last (Rev. 22:13).

DISCOVER FIRST process includes two elements:

  1. Participation in the Sunday afternoon (Jan. 24) session.  (Lunch will be provided.)
  2. Time for mentoring.  A mentor or mentoring couple will spend time with the interested participant sharing the story of faith, exploring what it means to love the Lord, praying together, discussing the relationship with Jesus.

If you are interested in participating in DISCOVER FIRST, please contact the church office or one of the staff pastors.   You can also register on-line by sending an e-mail with your name and phone number to missy@frcoc.org.
